LDS Missionary Photo Session | Poland Mission Legacy
Every once in a while, a session comes along that feels like more than just a collection of photographs- it feels like a story coming full circle; in more ways than one! This legacy missionary session proves it!
Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a young man preparing to leave for a two-year mission in Poland as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His excitement and quiet strength were evident in every frame. But what made the session especially touching was what he brought with him for props: his father's Polish flag and well-worn copy of the Book of Mormon-both of which had been with his dad when he also served in Poland years ago!
In the LDS faith, missionaries don't choose where they'll serve. Instead, they answer a series of questions during the application process- about their language preferences, willingness to leave their home country, and family mission history. Then, through prayer and revelation, the assignment is made by church leaders, including members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. There are more than 450 missions worldwide, so being called to serve in the exact same country as his father is incredibly special. Holding those same items in hand, he's not just stepping into a new chapter- he's stepping into a legacy. His older brother also served a mission, traveling to Belgium and the Netherlands, where he spoke Dutch. It's a beautiful tradition of faith and service that runs deep in their family.
There's a special tradition in LDS missionary culture: many families take a photo of the missionary's shoes before they leave, and then again when they return- often worn, scuffed, and full of stories. It's a simple but powerful reminder of the miles walked, the service given, and the transformation that takes place over two years. I made sure to capture a detail shot of the dress shoes he wore for the session- pristine for now, but soon to be a part of a journey all their own. Especially because I took the detail shot before knowing, Brennen's mom shared the meaningful tradition with me when she realized I was taking the photos!
Watching history and heritage pass from father to son, captured in a single moment, was powerful.
But the full circle didn't end there.
His mom and I go way back- we worked together three years ago in Indiana! Life took us both to Colorado, and while we had talked about grabbing lunch and reconnecting, the busyness of life always got in the way. Then one day, she reached out and asked if I'd be interested in LDS missionary photography- photographing Brennen before he left on his mission. I only had 2 weeks left in the Springs, so of course I had to make time for this special request. I was honored she trusted me with such a special time. And just like that, our paths crossed again in such a meaningful way. This lovely symbolic layer adds to this story!
It's moments like these that remind me why I love photography so much. It's not just about faces or poses- it's about stories, connections, and the beautiful, unexpected ways life brings us back together.
To this incredible young missionary: may your time in Poland be filled with growth, joy, and purpose- just like your fathers was. And thank you for letting me be a small part of your journey!
