Fall Family Photos at West Park | Carmel Indiana Family Photographer
There is just something about fall family photos in Indiana—the warm colors, golden light, cozy outfits, and that little bit of magic that comes with the season. And when it comes to beautiful locations for fall family photos in Carmel, Indiana, West Park is one of my favorites. Another great secret about West Park... these photos in this post were done well before peak fall, they were done the first week of September! So if you want some fall colors, but don't want to wait for peak times, west park is the place. It has a fall appearance all year round. I've. photographed West Park many different months, even November, leaves are still on the tree's and colors are still vibrant!
As a Carmel, Indiana family photographer, I love finding locations that give families plenty of room to move, play, and simply be themselves. West Park is perfect for exactly that.
A Beautiful Location for Fall Family Photos in Carmel, Indiana
West Park offers so much variety for a family photography session. The open grassy areas, walking paths, trees, and natural scenery create a beautiful backdrop without distracting from what matters most—the people in the photos.
During the fall, the park becomes especially beautiful as the trees begin to change and the landscape fills with warm greens, golds, oranges, and earthy tones. Depending on the time of year, we can create everything from bright and airy portraits to those warm, cozy fall images that feel like they belong framed in your home.
It is one of the reasons I love photographing families throughout Carmel and Hamilton County. There are so many gorgeous outdoor locations, but West Park gives us plenty of space and variety within one session. This park is HUGE. IF you're up for walking, there's lots of different spots, if not, no worries, there are plenty of spots near the parking lot as well! There's a public restroom as well. Plenty of parking. I ask clients to park on the west side, to shield the playplace/splash pad from their kiddos so they aren't upset when they spot it when parking. Lots of my clients will enjoy the playground afterwards if they happen to spot it, it makes for a great bribe and great reward for giving me the best smiles ever!!
Family Photos That Feel Like Your Family
My approach to family photography is relaxed, candid, and focused on connection.
Of course, we'll get those classic photos of everyone together and looking at the camera—because Grandma needs one! But I also want to capture the moments in between.
The little hands holding yours. The belly laughs. Your kids running toward you. The way they snuggle into your shoulder. The silly faces and personalities that make this season of your family exactly what it is.
Instead of spending your entire session worrying about everyone standing perfectly and smiling at the camera, I'll guide you with movement and simple prompts so your photos feel natural.
Walk together. Snuggle your babies. Chase your kids. Make each other laugh.
You just love on your people, and I'll take care of the rest.
What to Wear for Fall Family Pictures
Choosing outfits is one of the biggest questions families have before their session. For fall photos, I love warm neutrals and rich, earthy colors that complement the natural scenery.
Think creams, camel, rust, olive green, muted burgundy, warm browns, denim, and soft textures. Layers like cardigans, sweaters, jackets, and dresses can also add movement and dimension to your photos.
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, try choosing coordinating colors and mixing subtle textures. Avoid large logos and extremely bright or neon colors that can pull attention away from your faces.
Most importantly, choose clothing that still feels like you. Your family photos should look like your family—not like everyone had to wear matching outfits just because Pinterest told you to. Also, consider how they will display in your home. Let them compliment your natural draw to your preferred aesthetic. When they are hanging on your walls, you want them to jive with your decor!
The Best Time for Fall Photos at West Park
For outdoor family sessions, I love photographing later in the day when the sunlight becomes softer and warmer. That beautiful evening light can add so much warmth and dimension to your images.
Fall sessions in Carmel are especially popular because Indiana's colorful season never seems to last quite long enough. If you're hoping for those gorgeous autumn tones, we have a long window fortunately. Some parks, not so much, but this one- yes!!!
And don't worry if your kids aren't usually interested in sitting still for photos.
They don't need to be.
Some of my favorite images happen when kids are exploring, playing, running, or completely forgetting that I'm even there.
